The Federal Government has called on the authorities and people of Niger Republic to pursue a peaceful and inclusive resolution to the country’s political crisis and work towards restoring constitutional order.
Nigeria made the call while expressing concern over the prevailing political and security situation in its neighbouring country.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, the Federal Government said Nigeria remained deeply interested in peace, security, democracy and development in Niger, given the strong historical and cultural ties between both countries.
According to the government, stability in Niger is important not only to the country itself but also to Nigeria, the wider West African sub-region and the Sahel.
Nigeria warned that resorting to force as a means of resolving political disagreements could undermine efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the country.
The Federal Government therefore urged the Nigerien authorities and citizens to embrace dialogue and work towards an inclusive process capable of restoring stability and constitutional governance.
It stressed that a peaceful and stable Niger would have positive implications for regional security and development, particularly given the close relationship between the two neighbouring countries.
Nigeria reiterated its commitment to peace and stability in the sub-region, urging all relevant stakeholders in Niger to place the interests of the country and its people above political differences.
The government said resolving the situation peacefully and through constitutional means remained critical to strengthening regional peace, security and development.
