The Benue State Police Command has rescued a one-day-old baby allegedly stolen shortly after delivery at a healthcare facility in Gboko and arrested 11 suspects in connection with the incident.
The newborn was recovered by operatives attached to A Division, Gboko, following a report lodged by Aondofa Chia, whose wife had recently given birth at the facility.
According to the police, investigations commenced immediately after the baby was reported missing and led to the arrest of nine suspects for questioning.
Further investigation reportedly resulted in the arrest of two additional suspects at about 10:00 p.m. on the same day, bringing the number of suspects in custody to 11.
The police identified Mrs Nguhemen Asugh, 35, as the principal suspect allegedly involved in the theft of the infant.
Following the recovery operation, the baby was safely reunited with the mother, while the suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged members of the public to cooperate with the police in providing information that could assist ongoing investigations.
