The United States Department of State has revoked more than 175,000 visas held by foreign nationals as the Trump administration intensifies its screening of visa holders.
The department said the cancellations were linked to violations of visa conditions, criminal activities, fraud, threats of violence against US citizens, abuse of the immigration system and conduct considered a threat to national security.
According to the department, most of the visa revocations followed encounters with law enforcement agencies, with criminal activity, assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related offences among the leading reasons for the action.
The State Department also cited cases involving child abuse, sexual assault, reckless driving, fraud and embezzlement among the grounds for cancelling visas.
In a fact sheet outlining some of the cases, the department said one foreign national was charged with felony rape and sexual battery involving a mentally disabled victim, while another faced charges including felony kidnapping, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor.
Other cases involved allegations of possession of child sexual abuse material, sodomy of a child, aggravated sexual battery and sexual assault of a student by a foreign national working as a teacher.
The department also highlighted a case involving a foreign national arrested for driving under the influence while in possession of heroin and allegedly having a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
Another visa holder was accused of participating in a Medicaid fraud scheme involving more than $5 million in allegedly fraudulent claims.
The State Department said the revocations were part of its ongoing vetting operations aimed at protecting US communities from individuals who violate visa conditions or pose security and public safety concerns.
The administration also announced sanctions against several foreign nationals accused of celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The department reaffirmed that it would continue reviewing visa holders and taking action against individuals whose conduct violates US laws or threatens public safety and national security.
