More than 30 suspected miscreants have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for allegedly harassing and extorting motorists along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway.
The arrests were made during a midnight enforcement operation conducted on Sunday to tackle activities reportedly threatening the safety of motorists and other road users along the busy route.
The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a post on his Facebook page.
Wahab said the operation targeted individuals allegedly involved in stopping motorists, demanding money from them and intimidating those who refused to comply.
He added that some of the suspects were also accused of damaging vehicles when motorists failed to meet their demands.
The commissioner said the operation was part of the state government’s efforts to curb motorists’ harassment and improve security along major roads in Lagos.
He stated that the RRS would continue to carry out intelligence-led operations against individuals whose activities threaten public safety or disrupt the free movement of people and vehicles.
The latest arrests underscore the state government’s renewed efforts to address alleged extortion and harassment of motorists along major transportation corridors.
