The Lagos State Government has arrested 27 suspected hoodlums for allegedly removing critical structural materials from the newly constructed Festac Town-Alakija Bridge.
The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated midnight enforcement operation involving the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, warning that the alleged vandalism could endanger motorists and other users of the bridge.
Wahab said preliminary investigations showed that the suspects allegedly removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables and other materials considered essential to the stability and safety of the bridge.
He described the alleged act as a serious threat to public safety and a deliberate attempt to undermine government investment in critical infrastructure.
According to him, the suspects would be prosecuted in line with Lagos State laws after investigations.
The commissioner said the state government would sustain enforcement operations against vandals and other individuals whose activities threaten public infrastructure and the safety of residents.
He urged residents to protect public facilities and support government efforts to safeguard infrastructure across the state.
