The newly inaugurated executive committee of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Branch, has outlined an ambitious roadmap for its 2026–2028 administration, with a strong focus on members’ welfare, healthcare advocacy, institutional development, and strengthening the association.
The decisions were reached at the inaugural State Officers’ Committee meeting held on Tuesday at the Dr. Makekodunmi Conference Hall, where the new leadership also received the formal handover of the association’s secretariat, documents and other assets from the immediate past executives.
The meeting was attended by the Chairman, Dr. Sunday Enimola; Vice Chairman, Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Bajomo; General Secretary, Dr. Seye Olufunso; Deputy General Secretary, Dr. Ayokunle Adeleye; Treasurer, Dr. Islamiat Soneye; Public Relations Officer, Dr. Rotimi Akintunde; Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Adeyemi Kareem; Immediate Past Chairman, Dr. Luqmon Ogunjimi; Immediate Past Secretary, Dr. Oludotun Osikoya; and Immediate Past Vice Chairman, Dr. Oludolamu Adedayo.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the association, Dr. Sunday Enimola, called for unity among members, stressing that the newly elected officers must work together to advance the objectives of the association. He also expressed concern over what he described as the declining respect for the medical profession and urged members to collectively restore its prestige.
During the handover, the Immediate Past Chairman, Dr. Luqmon Ogunjimi, presented land documents and court rulings relating to the association’s properties at Laderin, Ajebo and Kobape, while advising the members to either develop the Laderin land or dispose it as the case may be.
The immediate past leadership also handed over the NMA House, the association’s bus, computer systems and other secretariat equipment. It was disclosed that the secretariat requires significant upgrades, including roof repairs, electrical rewiring, replacement of ageing air conditioners, improved water supply, solar power installation and the acquisition of a new bus. Members were informed that a geophysical survey had already identified a suitable location for a borehole within the NMA House premises, pending funding.
The committee also approved plans for a series of courtesy visits to critical stakeholders, including the Ogun State Ministry of Health, heads of health institutions, the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration, the judiciary, security agencies, traditional rulers and other relevant institutions, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in advancing healthcare delivery.
A major highlight of the meeting was the reaffirmation of the Nigerian Medical Association as the umbrella body for all medical affiliates. The leadership resolved to strengthen collaboration with affiliate associations and encourage greater participation of their members in NMA activities.
The committee also deliberated on the appointment of Assistant General Secretaries and agreed that competence, commitment and inclusiveness would guide the selection process, while the General Secretary was given one week to conclude the appointments.
Presenting the administration’s strategic agenda, the Chairman unveiled programmes aimed at improving members’ welfare through a welfare fund, health insurance, recognition awards, cooperative and thrift schemes, mentorship programmes for young doctors, continuous professional development, leadership training and improved member engagement.
The administration also pledged to intensify advocacy for improved hospital infrastructure, increased recruitment of doctors, better healthcare policies and stronger public health campaigns through community outreaches, health screenings and media engagement.
Other priorities include digital transformation of the secretariat, transparent financial management, promotion of mental health and wellbeing, quarterly town hall meetings, family recreation programmes, sporting activities, strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and other organisations, as well as attracting grants and sponsorships for association programmes.
As part of its legacy projects, the executive committee announced plans to develop a modern and functional NMA Secretariat, acquire a 14- or 18-seater bus, advocate for the construction of the access road linking MKO Abiola Way to the Doctors’ House, organise an NMA Health Summit, embark on tree-planting initiatives and establish a Doctors’ Spouse Support Group.
The meeting also considered several administrative matters, including direct deduction of members’ dues, increased participation of house officers in association activities, preparations for the next National Executive Council meeting, budget presentation, ratification of auditors, appointment of signatories to the association’s accounts, establishment of a financial cooperative to provide soft loans for members, and the employment of an additional technology-savvy staff member for the secretariat.
The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by the Chairman, who commended members for their commitment and dedication to the association’s progress before the officers took a group photograph to mark the beginning of the new administration.
