Oba Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, has called on Nigerians to reject vote-buying and other forms of electoral inducement ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying the practice has continued to produce poor leadership in the country.
The monarch made the appeal on Thursday at the 8th anniversary lecture of Penpushing Media Organisation, held under the theme, “Restoring Electoral Integrity: The Path to Good Governance and Public Accountability.”
He stressed that the quality of Nigeria’s leadership depends on the decisions citizens make during elections, urging voters to choose candidates based on competence, integrity and vision rather than financial inducements.
According to Oba Matemilola, many of the country’s governance challenges stem from the willingness of some voters to exchange their votes for money, allowing individuals without the required capacity and character to assume public office.
He urged Nigerians to resist politicians who attempt to influence voters through cash or gifts, warning that the temporary benefits of vote-selling often result in years of poor governance.
The Olowu maintained that credible, free and fair elections remain the foundation for good governance, accountability and national development.
The event was attended by media practitioners, government officials, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, who discussed ways to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process and deepen democratic accountability.
