United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed America’s commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria, praising President Bola Tinubu’s leadership in confronting terrorism and insecurity.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump commended Tinubu’s efforts to address the country’s security challenges, particularly attacks on Christian communities. The correspondence was made public on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The US President described the partnership between Nigeria and the United States as vital amid growing security threats across West Africa and other parts of the world. He said both countries share a common commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
Trump also highlighted the significance of the US–Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, describing it as a strong framework for enhancing bilateral security collaboration.
He noted that the deployment of United States Special Operations Forces to train personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces demonstrates Washington’s commitment to helping Nigeria strengthen its capacity to combat terrorism, improve intelligence gathering, and protect lives and property.
According to Trump, the collaboration is aimed at equipping Nigerian security personnel with the skills and resources needed to safeguard citizens, including vulnerable communities affected by violent attacks.
The US leader expressed optimism about deepening cooperation with President Tinubu throughout his administration, stressing that stronger US–Nigeria ties would contribute to regional stability and national prosperity.
