Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has revealed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected in the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.
According to him, the agreement provides that Obi would complete a single term from 2027 to 2031 before supporting the return of the presidency to Northern Nigeria.
He said the understanding was documented in two separate agreements—one signed as part of the party’s arrangements and another signed personally between himself and Obi.
Kwankwaso expressed confidence that Obi would honour the pact, describing him as a man of integrity who would not renege on the agreement.
“I personally believe him, and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will change,” Kwankwaso said.
“We are all gentlemen. We have accepted to put it even on paper. We have signed one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us.”
He explained that the agreement requires Obi to work with party leaders, stakeholders and supporters at the end of the administration to facilitate a smooth transfer of power to the North after the 2031 election.
Kwankwaso said the arrangement reflects the party’s commitment to unity, mutual trust and equitable power sharing ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
