Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said his decision to join forces with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was driven by their shared vision for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.
He explained that discussions held during coalition negotiations, as well as recommendations from a joint committee set up by both camps, convinced him that Obi shares similar ideas on governance and national development.
Describing the former Anambra State governor as a dependable and committed leader, Kwankwaso said his perception of Obi changed after a series of engagements following the 2023 general election.
According to him, although he believed he knew Obi before the 2023 presidential election, subsequent interactions gave him greater insight into his leadership qualities.
“Now I know that Peter is a very serious politician. He has this country in mind and is somebody that one can rely on,” Kwankwaso said.
He added that both leaders compared their policy blueprints and found only minor differences, making it easier to forge a political partnership under the NDC.
Kwankwaso said the alignment of their ideas and aspirations for Nigeria ultimately laid the foundation for their alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.
