The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448AH, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, and made available to journalists in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Aderibigbe said the decision was made to enable Muslim faithful in the state to observe and celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic calendar without hindrance.
“Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday 17th June, 2026 will be observed as a Public Holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448AH. This celebration marks the beginning of Islamic New Year,” the statement read.
On behalf of Governor Ademola Adeleke, the commissioner extended warm greetings to Muslim brothers and sisters across the state. He prayed that the occasion would bring peace, prosperity and unity to Osun.
The government also encouraged residents to shun rancour and disharmony during the festivities. It urged citizens to participate joyfully in celebrations that promote togetherness and mutual respect among all religious groups.
According to Islamic authorities, the year 1448AH begins on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon. The lunar year will run from June 16, 2026, to approximately June 5, 2027, on the Gregorian calendar.
Hijira marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of reflection, prayer and new beginnings. In Nigeria, several states often declare public holidays to mark the day.
The Osun government reiterated its commitment to religious harmony and peaceful coexistence. It urged residents to use the holiday to pray for the state and the nation as the new Islamic year begins.
