Youths in Umuadara, Umulogho community, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, have arrested a man suspected to be involved in the killing of Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo.
The arrest followed a community-led investigation coordinated by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa. According to a community source, the youths tracked and apprehended the suspect after a video interview containing an alleged confession circulated online.
The suspect was identified as Onyema Okonkwo. In the viral video, he reportedly admitted that he and another individual identified only as Emmanuel visited the student’s residence on the evening of the incident.
Community sources said Achumba was alone in the apartment at the time. Two other occupants had temporarily left for their nursing practical programme, leaving her the sole resident in the building.
The suspect allegedly stated in the video that the victim was assaulted before she was killed. The claim is now part of the evidence being reviewed by authorities.
Following the arrest, the youths handed Okonkwo over to the police for further investigation and prosecution. No official statement had been released by the Imo State Police Command at the time of filing this report.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye had not responded to enquiries as of press time. The command is expected to provide updates as investigations progress.
The killing has sparked outrage in Obowo and surrounding communities, with residents calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice. Youth groups say they will continue to support security agencies to curb violent crime in the area.
The case adds to growing concerns over the safety of students living off-campus in Imo State. Community leaders have urged calm while awaiting the outcome of police investigations.
