The Ondo State Police Command has rescued 12 victims abducted by suspected kidnappers in Isua Akoko, after a coordinated operation involving police operatives, local hunters, and other security stakeholders.
The victims, including the drivers of two commercial Hummer buses, were freed alive following an intensive bush-combing operation in surrounding forests. They are currently receiving medical attention while arrangements are being made to reunite them with their families.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the buses, traveling from Benue State to Ibadan, were intercepted by armed men. The attackers forced several passengers out of the vehicles and marched them into a nearby forest.
The command said it received a distress report at about 1:30 a.m. and immediately activated a rescue operation. Operatives were swiftly mobilized to the scene to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
Commissioner of Police Felix Ohagwu led an on-the-spot assessment of the area and held strategic engagements with community heads, vigilante groups, and other stakeholders. He stressed the need for sustained collaboration to secure the release of remaining victims and prevent future attacks.
According to the command, sustained pressure from the combined security team forced the kidnappers to abandon some of the captives. Intelligence-led surveillance and tracking efforts are ongoing to trail the fleeing suspects.
Additional tactical and intelligence assets have been deployed to the area to reinforce the rescue and manhunt operations. Police said operations are still ongoing to free the remaining victims and bring all those involved to justice.
Ohagwu commended the bravery and swift response of the operatives, tactical teams, and local hunters involved in the operation. He urged residents to remain calm and provide timely information to aid ongoing efforts.
