Akinteye Babatunde of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology has been elected the new National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students following the association’s 2026 national convention in Abuja.
Babatunde secured victory in a keenly contested election involving five presidential candidates. He succeeds outgoing president Olushola Oladoja, whose tenure ended with the conclusion of the convention held at the Old Parade Ground.
The election was conducted under tight security, with police officers and Department of State Services operatives present. Delegates described the process as one of the most peaceful conventions in NANS history, with no incidents of violence or disruption reported.
Speaking after his emergence on Monday, Babatunde thanked delegates for entrusting him with the leadership of the student body. He pledged to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration and strengthen unity among Nigerian students nationwide.
“In the history of NANS, this is one of the best conventions we have witnessed. There was no crisis, no gunshot, no fight. All the contestants against me have congratulated me already. This shows that NANS is united,” he said.
The new president, who previously served as NANS Senate President, assured students that his administration would make its impact felt across campuses. He said the association would remain active and focused on advancing student welfare and interests.
Outgoing president Olushola Oladoja described the successful election as a high point of his tenure. He expressed confidence in Babatunde’s capacity to lead and said he believed the incoming president would surpass his own achievements.
“I am happy that the person who emerged is someone I strongly believe in and trust in terms of capacity. I pray God grants him wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and strength to lead NANS successfully,” Oladoja said.
Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, Omotayo Samuel, said over 300 delegates participated, including Student Union Government presidents, Senate presidents, and other student leaders from tertiary institutions across the country. The committee assured stakeholders that the process was free, fair, and credible.
Other candidates in the presidential race included Aminu Haruna Maipampo of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Awoyinpa Opeoluwa Elijah of Federal University of Technology Akure, Olumide Odumosu Josiah of Olabisi Onabanjo University, and Opaleye Samuel Oladutun of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.
