Suspected gunmen have killed Wendy Achumba, a nursing student of the College of Nursing Umulogho in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, in a gruesome attack at her off-campus apartment.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, according to reports from the area. Achumba, who had completed her midwifery training and was undergoing post-basic studies, was found dead in her apartment the following morning. Details surrounding the circumstances of her death remain unclear.
The deceased hailed from Isiala-Ngwa in Abia State. News of her killing spread quickly among students and residents, sparking fear and outrage in the Obowo community.
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Command said it had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. The command described the killing as tragic and assured the public that efforts were underway to bring those responsible to justice.
“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment,” said police spokesperson Henry Okoye in a statement on Friday.
According to Okoye, the Divisional Police Officer and operatives visited the scene immediately after receiving the report. The body was recovered and deposited at the morgue for autopsy as investigations began.
The police spokesperson said one suspect had already been arrested and was undergoing preliminary questioning. He added that detectives were working to unravel the motive behind the attack and identify other individuals involved.
Okoye appealed to students and residents to remain calm, stating that the situation was under control. He assured that security measures had been stepped up around the college and surrounding areas to prevent a recurrence.
The killing adds to growing concerns over the safety of students living off campus in parts of Imo State. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are expected as the case progresses.
