A woman, Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, has been arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle substances suspected to be a psychoactive drug into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Sowunmi was arrested at about 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine security screening at the entrance of the facility.
The Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, said the suspect had arrived at the centre to visit an inmate, Dare Sowunmi, who is on death row.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Owolola Olayinka, correctional officers discovered a sachet of Milo beverage allegedly containing substances suspected to be “colos” during the screening.
The command said the discovery demonstrated the vigilance of its personnel and their commitment to preventing prohibited items and illicit substances from being taken into custodial facilities.
Following the arrest, Sowunmi was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers for their alertness and professionalism.
Adesina reaffirmed the Service’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking and other criminal activities within correctional facilities, stressing that custodial centres are intended to promote the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
He warned members of the public against attempting to compromise the security of correctional facilities by bringing prohibited items into the centres.
The command further warned that anyone found engaging in such acts would face the full consequences of the law.
