Quantum Packaging Nigeria Limited, a paper processing company in Ogun State, has been shut down by the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) over alleged illegal waste disposal and open burning.
The company, located along the Lusada-Igbesa Road in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, was sealed after surveillance by the state waste management authority reportedly uncovered an unauthorised dumpsite operated near its factory.
Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Akintunde, disclosed the development on Monday, saying the alleged activities contravened the OGWAMA Law 2020 and the Ogun State Environmental and Public Health Law 2006.
Akintunde said the authority had earlier discovered that the company was disposing of waste indiscriminately within its premises instead of engaging government-accredited waste collectors.
He explained that the company was warned to stop the practice, after which surveillance officers monitored its waste disposal activities.
According to him, the subsequent monitoring allegedly revealed a large dumpsite near the factory where waste was also being burnt.
Akintunde said the government was therefore compelled to shut the company to prevent further environmental degradation and protect residents from potential health risks associated with improper waste disposal and open-air burning.
He warned that the government would not allow companies to engage in activities capable of compromising public health and the environment.
The OGWAMA boss said the company would remain sealed until it closes the illegal dumpsite and submits a remediation plan for the removal and proper management of the accumulated waste.
