Academic activities have been disrupted at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, as the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, commenced an indefinite strike over alleged underpayment of members’ salaries and allowances.
The union announced the industrial action in a statement issued on Wednesday by its chairperson, Terseer Abari, following a congress held on August 12, 2026.
Abari said the strike would continue until the outstanding salary components owed members were paid by the appropriate authorities.
According to the union, the university had paid only two of the four components contained in the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.
The statement said members had received the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and Earned Academic Allowance, while the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance remained largely unpaid.
The union said the two outstanding components were paid only for January and February 2026, while just 39 per cent of the CATA for March 2026 had been paid.
“These all amount to underpayment of salaries of members of ASUU,” the union said.
The chapter appealed to the relevant authorities to settle the outstanding payments to enable academic activities to resume.
The union did not specify when the strike would be suspended, but said payment of the outstanding entitlements was necessary for a return to normal academic activities.
