Police operatives in Benue State have killed two suspected bandits and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a deadly attack on Afeyi-Ogboju Community that claimed the lives of 13 residents.
The operation was launched after the Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, directed tactical teams to track down those responsible for the assault, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to the police, the two suspects were members of the gang that invaded the agrarian community between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., rustled about 20 cows and opened fire on residents.
The attackers reportedly killed 13 people, including children, injured several others and set multiple houses ablaze before fleeing with the stolen livestock.
During the follow-up operation, police recovered one AK-47 rifle and 15 rounds of live ammunition from the neutralised suspects.
CP Nwadiogbu later visited Afeyi-Ogboju Community with tactical teams to assess the extent of the destruction and reassure residents of the command’s commitment to bringing the remaining perpetrators to justice.
The police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal gang involved in the attack.
