At least three people have been killed and hundreds displaced after a heavy downpour accompanied by a powerful windstorm swept through several communities in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State, leaving a trail of destruction.
The overnight storm devastated Tsohon Nguru (Old Nguru), Filing Idi and neighbouring communities, destroying homes, shops, market stalls, perimeter fences and other property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Several residents were also injured, while many families were forced to flee their homes. Some have taken refuge with relatives, while others are sheltering in public buildings.
An eyewitness, Bukar Adamu, said the disaster struck overnight, catching many residents unprepared.
“The disaster occurred overnight. It killed at least three people and destroyed many houses, walls and property worth millions of naira, forcing victims to seek shelter in different locations,” he said.
Adamu appealed to the government and humanitarian organisations to provide urgent relief materials and support to affected families.
“We are calling on the government and well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of the victims and their families,” he added.
One of the affected residents, Mustapha Modu, said the windstorm tore off the roof of his house, forcing him to evacuate his family to a safer location.
“The wind blew off the roof of my house. I had to take my wife and children to my brother’s house for safety,” he said.
The widespread destruction has sparked calls for swift government intervention to provide emergency relief and assist displaced residents in rebuilding their lives.
