Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the abduction of a woman at the Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City, describing the attack as unacceptable and a direct assault on innocent residents.
In a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Patrick Ebojele, the governor directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police to launch a swift and coordinated investigation into the incident. He said the priority is to secure the safe rescue of the victim and arrest those behind the attack.
“I strongly condemn this act of kidnapping and I call on the Commissioner of Police to immediately open investigation into the matter,” Okpebholo stated. He added that the state government would not tolerate any action that threatens public safety or disrupts the peace of Edo.
The governor warned that his administration would not relent until those responsible are apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting residents and maintaining order across the state.
Okpebholo urged residents of Benin City and other parts of Edo to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station. He stressed that timely information from the public would support ongoing police operations and aid in preventing further crimes.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday at the Vegetable Market, was captured in a video that circulated online. According to reports, the woman was kidnapped while shopping in one of the stores at the market, raising fresh concerns about security in public spaces.
Security analysts have noted a rise in kidnapping cases in parts of Edo in recent months, with traders and commuters increasingly targeted in busy areas. The governor’s response comes amid growing calls for more visible policing and intelligence-driven operations in the state capital.
Okpebholo reiterated that security remains a top priority of his administration. He pledged continued investment in personnel, equipment and community engagement to make Edo safer and more conducive for business and daily life.
The governor assured residents that efforts would be sustained until those responsible for the Benin market abduction are brought to justice. He said the state would continue to work closely with security agencies to restore confidence and ensure that citizens can pursue their lawful activities without fear.
