Armed bandits invaded the Igbosi area of Idogun in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State in the early hours of Friday, destroying two buildings and abducting a nine-year-old boy.
The attack occurred at about 1:30 a.m., sending residents fleeing from their homes. The victim, identified as Oluwatobi Olaosebikan, is the son of a local pastor, Isaac Olaosebikan.
According to reports, the gunmen stormed the community shooting sporadically to create panic. They forced their way into the pastor’s residence, and in a desperate attempt to save his life, the pastor escaped into the bush, leaving his son behind.
The boy was taken away by the assailants to an unknown location. Another resident, Joel Owalekan, also reported that his house was unlawfully damaged as the attackers tried to gain entry. He escaped by fleeing to safety.
News of the invasion spread quickly, with residents abandoning their homes and seeking refuge in neighbouring communities for safety.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a WhatsApp message by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abayomi Jimoh. He said the attack was reported at about 2:30 a.m. by the pastor and Mr. Owalekan.
Jimoh said the Command has commenced an intensive manhunt for the kidnappers and mobilised personnel alongside the Amotekun Corps for a coordinated search-and-rescue operation.
Security operatives have combed surrounding forests and likely escape routes in an effort to rescue the child unhurt and apprehend the perpetrators. Relevant exhibits have also been recovered to aid investigations.
Commissioner of Police CP Felix Ohagwu has directed all tactical teams, intelligence units, and other security assets to intensify efforts toward the immediate rescue of the victim. The Command said it is working closely with other security agencies and local vigilante groups to ensure the criminals are brought to justice.
