The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Mr. Johnson Elleh for producing and circulating a misleading video that falsely alleged kidnapping and banditry along the Owode-Idiroko axis of the state.
According to the Command, through Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the viral video was immediately subjected to scrutiny upon receipt. Investigations showed that the claims were false, misleading, and deliberately created to cause fear, panic, and anxiety among residents. No kidnapping or banditry incident occurred in Owode-Idiroko or its environs.
Detectives identified Elleh as the person featured in the video, leading to his arrest. Preliminary findings indicate that he fabricated and circulated the false narrative for attention and content creation purposes.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to intentionally creating and disseminating the misleading content to generate online engagement and public reaction. The Command said investigation is ongoing and he will be charged to court upon completion.
The Ogun State Police Command strongly condemned the deliberate spread of fake news, false security alerts, and other forms of misinformation. It warned that such acts threaten public peace and security and will attract the full weight of the law.
The Command said it will continue to identify, arrest, investigate, and prosecute anyone found culpable in creating, publishing, recirculating, or disseminating unverified security-related information, regardless of status or motive.
Authorities also acknowledged the concerns of residents who may have been alarmed by the video. They reassured the public that Ogun State remains safe, peaceful, and secure, and urged people to remain calm and carry on with lawful activities.
Residents were advised to rely solely on verified information from official channels. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining public order across the state.
