The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the death of Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus, a 21-year-old 100-level Cyber Security student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, who reportedly died on May 30, 2026, following an alleged assault by members of the Man O’ War organization.
In a letter issued by Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the newly elected President of NANS, the students’ body described the incident as a tragic and disturbing violation of a student’s right to life and dignity. NANS said the loss has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian student community and demands urgent accountability.
NANS extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the FUTO student community, and all affected by the untimely demise of Chibuzor, who was also a member of Man O’ War. The association said it is deeply saddened by the heartbreaking development, which has left students in profound grief.
According to reports, the student died as a result of alleged recklessness and an inhumane assault linked to an accusation of stealing ₦13,500. NANS noted that the incident has left an enduring void in the hearts of those who knew him and those who did not.
The students’ body commended the Imo State Police Command for its prompt response, particularly the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Audu Garba Bosso. NANS acknowledged that the CP swiftly mobilized security operatives and ordered immediate intervention into the matter.
NANS also noted that the Commissioner directed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri for a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive investigation. The police were also instructed to identify, interrogate, and investigate all individuals connected to the incident.
The association described the police action as a significant step that reinforces public confidence in the capacity of the Force to uphold justice, accountability, and the rule of law. NANS urged the command to remain steadfast and uncompromising until the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
Furthermore, NANS called on the management of FUTO to immediately suspend the activities of the Man O’ War organization on campus pending the conclusion of investigations. The group said an organization meant to protect lives and property must uphold discipline and respect for human dignity at all times.
NANS said it remains vigilant and will continue to monitor proceedings closely until justice is duly served for Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus. The association reaffirmed its commitment to defending the safety, rights, and welfare of students across Nigeria.
