Former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami has emerged as the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate for Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Malami’s candidacy was confirmed on Sunday through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka. The former minister was affirmed as the party’s consensus aspirant following internal consultations.
The announcement also named the ADC’s senatorial candidates for the state. Retired Major General Aminu Bande was selected for Kebbi Central, while retired Deputy Comptroller General Ibrahim Muhammad Mera will contest Kebbi North. Garba Danjuma Limi secured the ticket for Kebbi South.
In the statement, Malami thanked party leaders and supporters for their confidence and support. “I sincerely appreciate the confidence and support shown by leaders, stakeholders, and supporters of the African Democratic Congress in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
The former minister, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the ADC, said the party remained committed to “purposeful leadership, good governance, justice, security, and sustainable development for Kebbi State and Nigeria as a whole.”
He added that with unity and determination, the ADC would build a more prosperous future for the state. Malami is expected to face incumbent Governor Nasir Idris of the APC in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest.
The development comes amid rising political tension in Kebbi State, marked by weeks of exchanges between both camps over insecurity, governance, and corruption. Since declaring his governorship ambition under the ADC, Malami has criticized the Idris administration’s handling of security and the economy.
The Idris administration has in turn accused Malami of misgovernance and political opportunism during his tenure as Attorney-General under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The accusations have further polarized the political atmosphere ahead of the polls.
Malami’s emergence unopposed as the ADC flagbearer signals the party’s intent to mount a strong challenge in Kebbi. Political observers say the 2027 race will likely center on security, economic management, and voter trust in both candidates’ records.
