A serving Mobile Police inspector, Jido Ahmed, has been arrested for allegedly robbing and killing a fuel attendant in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State after the attendant resisted the robbery attempt.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when two men rode into a filling station behind BCG Motor Park without masks. Eyewitnesses said they initially posed as customers and purchased fuel before pulling out guns and threatening staff.
According to an eyewitness account, one of the suspects wore a Mobile Police uniform during the attack. When 20-year-old fuel attendant Jibrin Inuwa of Garun Mallam hesitated to hand over money, one of the robbers shot him in the chest. The pair then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Inuwa was rushed to the General Hospital in Kontagora where he was confirmed dead. His body was later released to his family for burial in line with Islamic rites.
Police responded to a distress call about the robbery. A patrol team from ‘A’ Division Kontagora, led by the Divisional Police Officer, pursued the suspects to the Dadin-kowa area behind a vigilante office. The chase ended in a gun duel between the police and the suspects.
During the exchange, one suspect was shot in the leg, disarmed, and arrested. He was later identified as Inspector Jido Ahmed, attached to 61 PMF Kontagora but reportedly on special duty in Agwara LGA. An AK-47 rifle with number 38262 and 12 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition were recovered from him.
The injured officer was taken to the General Hospital, Kontagora, and then referred to the Police Clinic in Minna for treatment. According to the Niger State Police Command, he was confirmed dead around 1 am on Friday while receiving medical attention.
Spokesman for the Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a WhatsApp message on Friday. He said the attack happened on April 12, 2026, at 2:40 pm, and noted that the second suspect remains at large.
Abiodun added that investigation into the incident is ongoing and efforts to arrest the fleeing suspect have been intensified. The command reiterated its commitment to accountability and said further updates would be provided as the probe progresses.
