A brick moulder identified as Isreal Ayomide was stabbed to death on April 1, 2026, following a heated dispute over N200 at a block industry in the Ewupe community, Ota, Ogun State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the day at Ori-Ade Block, along Alaka Road, under the power line in the Rosiji area. The suspect, popularly known as Aboy, allegedly attacked the 22-year-old victim during an argument and fled the scene immediately after.
Community sources said the altercation between both men lasted only a few minutes before it turned fatal. One resident, Moyo, said Aboy pinned Ayomide down and stabbed him with a bottle. He said the victim died before members of the community could rush him to the hospital.
Another resident, Daniel, alleged that officers at the Onipanu Police Division detained community members who went to report the incident instead of launching a manhunt for the suspect. He claimed the suspect was known for attacking people with bottles during disputes and that some residents believe his conduct is linked to his mother being a former police officer.
The deceased’s father, Mr Israel, said he had planned to ban the suspect from his block industry a day before the incident. He explained that Aboy arrived at the workplace around 8 a.m. before Ayomide and later demanded N200 from his son. When Ayomide refused, an argument broke out.
According to Mr Israel, his son reminded Aboy during the argument that he would be sent away from the site that day, and a fight ensued. In the course of the fight, Ayomide fell, giving Aboy the chance to grab a bottle and stab him. The suspect fled before anyone could intervene, and Ayomide was confirmed dead at a nearby health centre.
Mr Israel said the area attracts young people because his son operated a car wash with a snooker board and table tennis beside the block industry, near a football field. He added that police detained about six shop owners nearby after the incident, claiming they were key witnesses. He said some neighbours who witnessed the incident were intimidated, making them afraid to speak.
A senior police officer in the area confirmed the incident on Wednesday but dismissed claims that the police were shielding the suspect because of his mother’s background. The officer said the suspect’s mother was a retired junior police officer and had told officers that her son should be arrested wherever he is found. The officer added that tracking the suspect’s phone had been difficult because he left it at home on the day of the incident.
Confirming the case, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the investigation is still ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect.
He described claims linking a retired police officer to the probe as unfounded and said details of the investigation cannot be divulged until it is concluded. He assured that the command is doing all it can to ensure the suspect is arrested and that justice will be served.
