A medical doctor, Dr Ere Ogbachi, has died from complications following the delivery of triplets in Bayelsa State, her family confirmed on Wednesday.
Her brother, Meshack Sintei, announced the death in a statement issued to the press and posted on social media. He said she passed away at about 2:45 am on April 14, 2026, in the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, after being rushed there for emergency intervention.
According to the family, Dr Ogbachi successfully gave birth to triplets at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri, Amassoma.
However, complications set in shortly after delivery. Medical teams at NDUTH initiated emergency care before transferring her to FMC Yenagoa for advanced intensive management.
The family described the sequence of events at FMC, noting that doctors and specialists at the ICU worked to stabilise her as her condition worsened. “We watched her struggling to live, we watched her gasping for breath, we watched how the team of doctors and other experts in FMC kept trying their best to revive her,” the statement read.
Sintei recounted that the SpO2 monitor attached to her showed oxygen saturation levels falling steadily from 70 to 50 and eventually to zero during resuscitation efforts. He said despite multiple interventions by the medical team, she could not be revived.
“It was a painful experience. My beloved sister died at exactly 2:45 am on April 14th 2026. A generation has been lost, and the Sintei family mourns,” he said. He described Dr Ogbachi as a dedicated professional who was committed to her patients and to the medical field.
Until her death, Dr Ogbachi served as a registrar at NDUTH. She was a member of the Nigerian Medical Association and an alumna of Niger Delta University, where she trained as a physician. Colleagues have described her as diligent, compassionate, and devoted to maternal health.
The death has drawn condolences from friends, colleagues, and members of the medical community in Bayelsa. The family expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support and prayers received since the incident. Sintei added that she died as a fighter and leaves behind newborn triplets.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation and further clinical details from the management of NDUTH and FMC Yenagoa were ongoing at the time of filing this report. The family said burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
