The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a TikToker, Pam Joseph, for spreading false information about a terrorist invasion in Abuja. The video, which went viral on social media, claimed that terrorists had invaded the nation’s capital and gunshots were “raining heavily” in parts of the city.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, warned content creators to desist from posting videos that may create panic in the territory. “Stop creating panic in the city. Saying that terrorists invaded Abuja is not a joke,” he said.
The police traced the suspect to Bwari and arrested him. During interrogation, Joseph admitted to creating the fake video to gain followers on TikTok. “We asked him the motive behind the video, he said he did it just to get followers on TikTok,” CP Sanusi said.
The police commissioner emphasized that the police have advanced technology to track down individuals spreading false information. “All content creators should note that the police have advanced. If you put out a false video, we will look for you wherever you are hiding and get you arrested.”
The arrest has sent a strong message to content creators to verify information before sharing it on social media. The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
