The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, has commenced its 2026 Easter Special Patrol Operations to ensure safety on major highways during the festive period.
The exercise, which began on April 1, is scheduled to run through April 8, in line with directives from the corps’ national headquarters in Abuja.
The Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, disclosed that both regular and special marshals have been strategically deployed across key corridors in Ogun State to guarantee smooth and hitch-free movement of motorists.
Fasakin made this known in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Odunsi Afolabi, a Superintendent Route Commander, and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He explained that the operation became necessary due to the anticipated surge in vehicular and human traffic as Christians across Nigeria join the global community to celebrate Easter.
The sector commander reiterated the position of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, stressing that strict enforcement would be carried out against traffic violations that often lead to road crashes.
According to him, the command will focus on offences such as excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, mix-loading of passengers with goods, lane indiscipline, and the use of mobile phones while driving. Other areas of enforcement include mechanical deficiencies, tyre violations, and non-compliance with seat belt and child restraint regulations.
To strengthen operations, Fasakin said 24-hour patrol, rescue, and traffic management services have been activated, supported by patrol vehicles, ambulances, and tow trucks.
As part of local interventions, the Acting Unit Commander in Ota, Wasiu Ogunmefun, has been directed to implement strategic traffic realignment at the Old Toll Gate along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
This includes closing illegal U-turns, restructuring damaged road kerbs, and conducting vehicular traffic counts to support future planning and policy formulation.
Fasakin urged motorists to take personal responsibility for their safety, reminding them that “it is only the living who celebrate,” while advising strict adherence to traffic rules and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.
The command also wished residents a peaceful Easter celebration, urging all road users to prioritise safety at all times.
