A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, backed by Minister Nyesom Wike, has stepped up efforts to resolve its prolonged internal disputes, with the Board of Trustees and the National Caretaker Committee signalling renewed focus on unity, respect for court decisions and preparations for pending congresses ahead of a national convention.
The 85th meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees in Abuja on Monday was a crucial step towards healing internal wounds. The BoT Chairman, Mao Ohuabunwa, urged leaders to prioritise collective interest over personal ambition, saying the party was at a defining moment.
Ohuabunwa noted that the PDP had endured months of leadership tussles and legal challenges but remained intact because of its institutional strength and adherence to constitutional principles. He explained that the delay in holding party congresses was a conscious decision taken to avoid undermining ongoing judicial processes.
The National Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, thanked the BoT for its consistent backing, which he said had been vital to the party’s stability at a crucial period.
He also thanked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for supporting the committee.
Mohammed said the holiday period was over and that the time had come for concrete steps to fulfil the mandate given to the Caretaker Committee.
He confirmed that the Ibadan High Court had issued a declaratory judgment in favour of the committee, insisting that the legal position was clear and that the party would continue to pursue justice.
The PDP is expected to release a timetable for activities related to outstanding congresses in some states, which will usher in a seamless national convention. Mohammed warned against complacency, saying the party could not afford to “sleep in our hands”.
The party’s efforts to resolve internal disputes come after a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan nullified the PDP’s National Convention held in the city between November 15 and 16, 2025.
The court ruled that the Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remained the only recognised National Working Committee of the PDP.
The PDP is working towards a national convention, and stakeholders are hopeful that the party will emerge stronger and more united. The party’s commitment to fairness, due process, and respect for the rule of law will be crucial in achieving this goal.
