Officers of the Kebbi State Hisbah Board have arrested a man allegedly found hiding inside a “Ghana Must-Go” bag at the home of a married woman in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi.
The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by the Director of Sharia at the board, Sirajo Kamba, in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria. He said the operation followed a tip-off from residents who suspected illicit activity at the residence.
According to Kamba, residents alerted Hisbah around 12:15 a.m. on Monday, May 18, after seeing the man enter the woman’s house. The board said the incident was reported as a violation of Islamic teachings on morality and public conduct.
“Upon receiving the report, the Kebbi Hisbah Board swiftly deployed officers to investigate,” Kamba said. When officers arrived, they requested permission to search the house, but the woman initially denied that anyone was inside.
After further persuasion, she allowed a thorough search of the premises. That led to the discovery of the suspect concealed inside a large “Ghana Must-Go” bag, according to the Hisbah director.
Kamba said preliminary investigations revealed an alleged romantic relationship between the man and the married woman. Both suspects reportedly admitted to the allegation during interrogation by Hisbah officials.
The director added that the suspects would be arraigned in court to face legal proceedings under Islamic law. He said the case forms part of the board’s mandate to uphold public morality in line with Sharia principles in the state.
The incident is similar to another recent Hisbah operation in Kano, where two women and a 35-year-old fish seller were arrested over an alleged attempt to engage in immoral conduct. The Kano board said the suspects were caught in a room preparing to commit the act.
Hisbah officials in Kebbi reiterated that they would continue to respond to public complaints and act promptly on reports of activities deemed contrary to Islamic teachings. The board urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior to the authorities.
