Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ogun State, has formally declared his intention to run again for the state’s top seat in the 2027 general elections.
The former federal lawmaker made his declaration in a letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the Ogun State PDP leadership. The letter was routed through the party chairman in Odogbolu Local Government Area and was confirmed Friday by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya.
“As a member of the party from Ward 4, Odogbolu Local Government, I write to notify you and the State Working Committee of my intention to contest for the Office of Ogun State Governor in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Adebutu wrote.
He pledged to abide by the PDP constitution and follow all party processes leading up to the primaries. “I shall continue to abide by the provisions of our party constitution and the outlined processes of the party on this journey that will eventually lead to the victory of our party in the coming general elections,” the letter stated.
Adebutu, who previously represented Remo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said his decision is driven by a desire to offer leadership and build on his past experience. He asked for the continued support of party members and stakeholders across the state.
This marks his third attempt at the governorship. Adebutu first ran in 2019 and was the PDP candidate again in 2023, when he lost to incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress. The 2023 contest ended in a legal battle that was resolved at the Supreme Court.
In his letter, Adebutu called for unity within the Ogun PDP ahead of the next election cycle. He told the state chairman, Abayomi Tella, that he remains willing “to continue to be of good service to the party and the good people of Ogun State.”
The declaration sets the stage for early maneuvering within the Ogun opposition. Party sources say other aspirants are also consulting, but Adebutu’s move makes him the first high-profile PDP figure to formally join the 2027 race in the state.
With the Independent National Electoral Commission yet to release the full timetable for the 2027 polls, political activity is already picking up across Ogun. Adebutu urged all factions to work together, adding, “Please accept assurances of my willingness to continue to be of good service to the party.”
