The Abia State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a local vigilante member who allegedly shot dead his girlfriend and attacked two others in Amakama, Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area.
The incident occurred in Umuanga Amakama Community and involved one Chinedu Anamelechi, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka.
Chinaka said the suspect allegedly shot dead Ezinne Ariwodo, stabbed her sister, and also shot another young man from the area. The command received information about the attack and immediately deployed operatives to the scene.
“Upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Command swiftly raced to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of the deceased in a pool of blood with gunshot injuries,” she said.
She disclosed that the two injured victims were rescued and rushed to the hospital. They are currently receiving treatment for their injuries.
The deceased was confirmed dead by medical personnel at the hospital. Her body has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Exhibits recovered from the scene were taken in for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. The police said the items will assist in the effort to track and apprehend the suspect.
Chinaka stated that normalcy has since been restored in the area following the deployment of operatives. She urged members of the community not to take the law into their hands while the investigation continues.
“Investigation is ongoing as efforts are being made to apprehend the suspect,” she said.
