Airstrikes in Iran’s Alborz province have killed 18 people, including two children, and wounded 24 others, according to state media reports. The deputy governor of Alborz province attributed the attack to US-Israeli strikes on residential areas, saying the assault targeted civilian infrastructure.
The judiciary’s Mizan Online website and Fars news agency reported the casualties, citing the deputy governor. Iran’s government has not released an updated overall casualty toll for the war in recent days, but local officials say the death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that at least 3,597 people had been killed, including 1,665 civilians, among them at least 248 children, as well as 1,221 military personnel and 711 people whose status had not been classified, as of April 6. The agency cited sources in Iran who provided the figures.
The strikes come amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, with Israeli strikes reportedly killing the intelligence chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. The killing has sparked fears of further escalation in the region.
The attack has sparked widespread concern and condemnation, with many calling for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. World leaders are urging restraint and calm, with the UN Secretary-General calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions.
The Iranian government has not officially commented on the strikes, but state media has blamed the US and Israel for the attack. Iranian officials have warned of consequences for what they call “Israeli aggression”.
