The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested no fewer than 583 young men and women for alleged immoral acts during the just concluded Eid-el-Fitr celebration in the state.
The figure was disclosed in a statement by the Deputy Commander-General of the board, Mujahid Aminuddeen, made available to journalists on Tuesday.
According to Aminuddeen, the arrests were made during the Sallah celebration, and the board deployed a total of 9,500 personnel across the state to check the excesses of individuals.
He stated that 275 commercial tricycle operators were apprehended for plaiting their hair and sporting hairstyles considered indecent and contrary to Islamic teachings.
Additionally, 21 tricycle operators were arrested for wearing three-quarter trousers, while 286 young women were nabbed for alleged indecent dressing during the festivities.
The board also arrested 85 tricycle operators for conveying male and female passengers together in ways deemed inappropriate.
Aminuddeen further disclosed that the board recovered 66 missing children during the Sallah celebrations and reunited them with their families.
The arrests, according to the board, were part of its ongoing enforcement drive tagged “Operation Fight Against Immorality,” aimed at sanitizing the state.
The Hisbah Board has been known to enforce Islamic laws and regulations in Kano State, and the latest arrests are part of its efforts to promote morality and decency in the state.
The board’s actions have been welcomed by some residents, who see it as a step towards promoting Islamic values and preventing immorality. However, others have criticized the board for being too harsh and restrictive.
