The Delta State Police Command is investigating an alleged sexual assault incident involving several women during a local festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
The disturbing footage, which circulated widely on social media, shows groups of young men attacking women in public, tearing their clothes, and subjecting them to various forms of molestation.
The incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, during an annual festival in the community, where women are allegedly expected to remain indoors. Any woman found outside during the event becomes a target for harassment by participants.
The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the incident as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing”. He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, had ordered a full investigation into the matter.
The police command condemned the incident, stating that no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens. The Commissioner of Police urged Deltans to remain calm, assuring that those responsible for the barbaric act will be arrested and brought to justice.
The command also called for witnesses who can provide useful information to aid the ongoing investigation. Residents are encouraged to report any information to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency hotlines.
This incident has sparked outrage, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the victims. The police have assured the public that they will take swift action against the perpetrators.
The Delta State Police Command has a history of taking action against gender-based violence, having marked 70 years of women in the Nigeria Police Force with a 5km walkathon against gender-based violence.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities.
