Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticized governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying they’re doing so for “personal survival.” He reacted to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, stating that politicians have the right to choose their platform.
Atiku described the 2027 general election as a referendum on President Bola Tinubu and the APC. He noted that political alignments and realignments are not unusual, stressing that even members of his family are free to hold independent views.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain accused Tinubu’s administration of using state institutions against opponents, aiming to create a one-party state. “This government fears accountability. It fears credible elections. It fears the people,” he said.
Atiku questioned the APC’s prospects in 2027, asking, “What will the APC campaign on hunger? hardship? hopelessness?” He warned citizens not to sell their votes, saying, “Do not trade your future. Do not mortgage your children’s tomorrow.”
The former VP emphasized that governors’ defections don’t reflect the APC’s strength but rather pressure and intimidation. He urged Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable and ensure their votes count in 2027.
