A senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for an investigation into the reported attack on former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Edo State.
The lawmaker described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and warned that rising political hostility poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan strongly condemned the reported assassination attempt, emphasizing that politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents.
The senator expressed concern about overzealous political actors who resort to harassment or aggression against opposition figures, stating that such actions are reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to national unity. She reiterated that democracy flourishes only where there is healthy competition, free expression, and respect for dissenting voices.
Akpoti-Uduaghan stressed that suppressing opposition activities undermines constitutional governance and called for swift and decisive action. She urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability, emphasizing that Nigeria must remain a nation where political differences are resolved through dialogue and the ballot, not through violence.
The lawmaker reaffirmed her commitment to defending democratic norms and safeguarding the rights of all Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation. The incident has sparked widespread debate about political intolerance and the need for restraint as political realignments gather momentum ahead of future electoral contests.
Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other ADC chieftains were allegedly attacked by suspected thugs in Benin, Edo State, during political activities surrounding the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the party. Photos and videos circulated by Obi’s former campaign spokesman showed several SUVs with smashed windshields, while the gate leading to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence appeared riddled with bullets.
The attack has raised concerns about the safety of opposition figures and political actors across party lines. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s call for investigation and accountability has been echoed by many, who emphasize the need for peaceful coexistence and respect for democratic principles.
The incident is a test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, and it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to the situation. Meanwhile, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s statement has been widely shared on social media, with many praising her courage and commitment to democratic values.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the investigation, it is hoped that the incident will serve as a catalyst for promoting peaceful politics and respect for human rights. The senator’s call for restraint and dialogue is a step in the right direction, and it is expected that all stakeholders will heed her appeal.
The situation is still unfolding, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. For now, Nigerians are urged to remain calm and vigilant, and to continue to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders.
