In a landmark judgment, the Bauchi State High Courts have delivered a stern blow to crime, convicting 64 offenders for various serious offences, including armed robbery, rape, kidnapping, conspiracy, culpable homicide, and fraud. The swift and decisive action by the judiciary sends a strong message to would-be offenders that crime will not be tolerated in Bauchi State.
The judgments, delivered during the last quarter of 2025, saw two convicts, Muhammad Maina and Yakubu Adamu, sentenced to death by hanging for armed robbery. This marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to combat violent crime and reassure citizens of their safety.
Seven defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of a fine for offences including rape, conspiracy, robbery, culpable homicide, and kidnapping. Those sentenced to life imprisonment include Shehu Isa, Adamu Adamu (aka Nalele), Mohammed Bello, Kabiru Ahmed, Muhammad Jibrin (aka Al-Amin), Usman Bello (Maigamo), and Manu Umaru (aka Alhaji Manu).
The courts also convicted 11 persons for fraud-related offences, sentencing them to three months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine. The convicts include Abubakar Shehu, Yusuf Aliyu Alhassan, Miracle Chidi, Dominic Lazarus, James Myaulompwa, Lawus Zakka, Sadiq Dosumo, Jude Titus, Joseph Olamide Adesunmila, Koche Samuel, and Falour Odinaka.
Other convicts received varying terms of imprisonment ranging from three months to ten years, with some given options of fine. The fines imposed ranged from N10,000 to N500,000, depending on the severity of the offences.
The Information Officer of the Bauchi State Judicial Service Commission, Saleh Umar, disclosed that the judgments followed the conclusion of trials in which the courts found the defendants guilty based on evidence presented by prosecutors. Umar emphasized that the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice and supporting government efforts to curb crime and enhance public safety remains unwavering.
The courts emphasized the need for strict penalties to deter criminal activities, particularly kidnapping, which was described as a persistent security threat in the state. The Bauchi State Judiciary’s resolute stance against crime is expected to boost public confidence in the justice system and reassure citizens that their safety is a top priority.
The convictions were secured under relevant provisions of the Penal Code, the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, and the Bauchi State Penal Code, 2022. The judiciary’s efforts are seen as a crucial step towards creating a safer and more secure environment for residents of Bauchi State.
