A chilling domestic dispute turned fatal in Umuahia, Abia State, on Monday, February 16, 2026, when a woman allegedly stabbed her husband, Immigration officer Chidiebere James, to death. The Abia State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect, who is now being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department for murder.
According to Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa, the conflict began on Sunday with a heated argument over their sick child and the husband’s alleged failure to provide money for treatment. The wife’s suspicion of infidelity, triggered by incriminating text messages on his phone, further escalated the tension.
Family members and the deceased’s sister reportedly intervened, temporarily calming the situation. However, tensions flared again early Monday morning inside their home in Umuihi, Umuogba Ekeoba, Ohuhu, Umuahia North LGA, leading to a physical altercation.
During the fight, the husband’s phone was damaged, prompting him to seize and destroy his wife’s phone in retaliation. In a sudden escalation, the woman allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors nearby and stabbed him. He collapsed shortly after and was later confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
A close family member and eyewitness said the victim’s corpse had been deposited at the hospital, leaving the community in shock. “Chidiebere was stabbed in the early hours of Monday, February 16, 2026,” the source said.
HRH Iheanyi Nwokenna, traditional ruler of Ekeoba Ancient Kingdom, confirmed the incident on Monday night, stating, “I have just been told about it. I am just returning from a trip.” He expressed deep concern over the rising tide of domestic violence in the area.
Residents of Umuihi, Umuogba Ekeoba have expressed mourning and alarm over the increasing reports of violent confrontations between spouses, calling for urgent community and governmental intervention to address domestic aggression.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will face murder charges as evidence is gathered. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward to aid the inquiry.
The case has sparked a broader conversation across Abia State about the need for better conflict‑resolution mechanisms, mental‑health support, and legal protections for families experiencing domestic stress.
As the community grapples with this tragedy, local leaders and civil society groups are urging couples to seek mediation and counseling before disputes escalate, emphasizing that no conflict should ever end in loss of life.
