A female pedestrian and member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries was fatally struck on Saturday at the NYSC Bus Stop in Igando, Lagos, by a Mercedes‑Benz C‑300 driver who fled the scene. The victim, on her way to a worship service at MFM Church, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred around mid‑day, prompting an immediate response from Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers stationed along the Igando axis. “Upon receipt of distress alerts, LASTMA personnel responded with commendable alacrity and operational proficiency,” the agency said.
LASTMA officers cordoned off the area to prevent secondary collisions and secure evidence. “Demonstrating tactical coordination and adherence to established emergency response protocols, the officers promptly cordoned off the accident scene to forestall secondary collisions and ensure the safety of other road users,” the statement added.
The driver, however, absconded from the scene after recognizing the fatal outcome. LASTMA described the flight as “a deeply reprehensible development” and “a flagrant violation of statutory and civic obligations incumbent upon motorists involved in traffic incidents.”
Police from the Igando Division, working with LASTMA, removed the abandoned vehicle from the carriageway and have launched a full‑scale investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect.
LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olajide Bakare‑Oki extended condolences to the victim’s family and the MFM Church community, calling the incident “tragic.” He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to traffic discipline and the preservation of human life.
Bakare‑Oki urged all motorists to exercise heightened vigilance, adhere strictly to speed limits, and respect pedestrian rights at all times. He emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation from every road user.
The incident has sparked public outrage on social media, with many demanding stricter enforcement of traffic laws and harsher penalties for hit‑and‑run offenders. Community leaders have called for increased traffic surveillance in high‑risk areas.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information about the fleeing driver to come forward, promising anonymity and protection for witnesses. The police have set up a dedicated hotline for tips related to the case.
As investigations continue, Lagos residents are reminded of the importance of safe driving and the devastating consequences of reckless behavior on the roads.
