The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a murder that occurred at about 7:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt. A trader, while trying to create space for his goods, asked a wheelbarrow pusher to move his cart, which was blocking the area.
The wheelbarrow pusher, identified as Zakara Afaaruwu, refused the request, and a heated argument broke out between the two men. During the altercation, Afaaruwu allegedly produced a dagger and stabbed the trader, Higightor Wenem, a 30‑year‑old from Mbagel Village, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
Wenem was rushed to the Military Hospital for emergency treatment, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. His body has been transferred to the morgue for an autopsy. The sudden loss of a young trader has sent shockwaves through the bustling market community, with many vendors expressing fear over safety in the area.
The violent incident sparked tension and pandemonium between members of the Hausa and Benue communities in the market area, raising concerns of possible retaliatory clashes. However, prompt intervention by police operatives restored calm and prevented a further breakdown of law and order.
The suspect, Zakara Afaaruwu, was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department. Police say he will face charges of murder as investigations continue, and they are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby shops to gather additional evidence.
Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe‑Koko, stated that the command is committed to maintaining peace and security across the state. She urged residents to remain calm and law‑abiding while the investigation proceeds, emphasizing that justice will be served swiftly.
Authorities have increased patrols around the Fruit Market and surrounding neighborhoods to deter any retaliatory violence. Community leaders from both ethnic groups have been called in for dialogue to ease tensions and promote peaceful coexistence among traders and residents.
The police command has promised to provide regular updates on the case and assured the public that justice will be pursued. Residents with any information relevant to the incident are encouraged to contact the police hotline, as community cooperation is seen as key to preventing future violence.
