The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to urgently investigate allegations that the United States has listed Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as a financier of terrorism, demanding that national security concerns override political considerations.
In a statement signed by NNPP National Secretary Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday and released in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the party stressed that “no single individual is greater than the country, especially when issues of national security are involved,” urging authorities not to treat the matter with “kid gloves.”
The NNPP said its three-year association with Kwankwaso revealed conduct it described as disruptive, alleging he “brought confusion into a political party that had existed peacefully for 22 years before he joined,” and accusing him of creating internal crises, including disputes with party founder Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
According to the party, Kwankwaso allegedly “terrorised everyone he met in the NNPP,” and created tensions that escalated during election tribunal proceedings in Kano after the 2023 general elections, where certain judicial observations reportedly described the Kwankwasiyya movement in controversial terms.
The NNPP stated that it terminated its Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiyya group shortly after the 2023 elections and subsequently expelled Kwankwaso over alleged anti-party activities and corruption, urging both U.S. authorities and the Federal Government to treat any alleged acts of terrorism as personal to him, not the party.
Referencing reported action by the United States Congress, the NNPP maintained that the development “confirms our fears” and called for immediate action by Nigerian security agencies, demanding “the immediate arrest and investigation of everyone linked with terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.”
The party challenged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity, stating that “the Federal Government should take the bull by the horns by ensuring that all private individuals and groups linked with terrorism are dealt with without fear or favour.”
The NNPP’s call for investigation comes amid heightened concerns over national security in Nigeria, with the party emphasizing that protecting citizens’ safety must be a priority for government and security agencies.
As of press time, there has been no official response from Senator Kwankwaso or his representatives regarding the allegations, while security agencies have yet to comment on whether a formal investigation will be launched.
