The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four persons in connection with the death of a mosque worshipper, Hameed Najeem, who died following an altercation at the Ummu Haani Adigun Memorial Central Mosque in Osogbo, the state capital.
The incident occurred on Friday, after the early morning (Fajr) prayer, and was reportedly sparked by an argument between Najeem and the mosque’s Imam during a sermon. Eyewitnesses said the argument was intense, but it was unclear what triggered the disagreement.
According to eyewitnesses, the Imam left the mosque as the situation became tense, while other worshippers attempted to restrain the deceased. However, the confrontation later moved outside the mosque premises, where Najeem was reportedly overpowered during the struggle.
The police were alerted, and four suspects were arrested in connection with the incident. The police also cordoned off the area to prevent further violence.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the development, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, had ordered a discreet and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
“The Commissioner of Police has taken interest in the case and directed that a high-level, discreet investigation be carried out,” Ojelabi said. “We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served.”
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further handling. The police are working to identify other suspects and gather more evidence.
The incident has sparked tension in the community, with relatives of the deceased visiting the mosque and accusing the Imam and some worshippers of involvement in Najeem’s death. The situation is being closely monitored by the police.
The police have urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to take its course. “We appeal to the public to cooperate with us as we investigate this incident,” Ojelabi said.
The police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
