The Ogun State government has ordered the immediate dismantling of the notorious Zaga settlement located in the Ijebu area, citing escalating security threats in the region and across Nigeria.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced this decisive and proactive move on Monday, following a high-level security meeting with heads of various security agencies held in Iperu-Remo, emphasizing a determined crackdown on criminal activities.
The state government will officially take over the Zaga settlement to prevent its continued use for unlawful and illicit activities, Abiodun stated, signaling a firm and uncompromising stance against insecurity.
“Landlords and individuals found to be accommodating miscreants or criminal elements will be decisively dealt with in strict accordance with the law,” the governor warned sternly, urging property owners to exercise utmost vigilance.
Governor Abiodun stressed that the activities of scavengers across Ogun State will be strictly regulated and monitored to curb criminal infiltration and other illicit practices, ensuring the safety of residents.
Security agencies in the state have been directed to intensify their operations, focusing on flushing out criminal hideouts within forests and government reserves, in a bid to restore peace and order.
“No panic, but we earnestly urge all residents to support the security agencies with any useful information,” Abiodun appealed, assuring citizens of enhanced and robust security arrangements.
A Forward Operating Base (FOB) is being prioritized for establishment in Ilara, a key border community in Yewa North, aimed at tightening surveillance and curbing cross-border criminal activities.
The governor also plans to convene a strategic meeting with representatives of non-indigene communities to strengthen mutual understanding and boost security cooperation. “We must work together for safety,” he said.
Ogun State’s action follows growing concerns over insecurity nationwide, including recent abductions in Kebbi and Niger states, though Abiodun didn’t link the move directly to Zaga.
“Security is not an option, it is a necessity,” Abiodun declared, vowing no leniency as agencies ramp up patrols and preparations ahead of festive periods.
