Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Olalekan Ifede, has encouraged public primary school teachers in Ogun State to use social media for learning and improving their teaching skills, not just for entertainment.
He gave the advice during the “Nestlé for Healthier Kids Teachers’ Training 2025,” held at Park-Inn by Radisson in Abeokuta and organised by Nestlé Nigeria Plc.
Ifede said social media contains many useful educational materials that can help teachers grow in their profession. He urged them to focus on content that adds value to their work.
He explained that the Nestlé training was designed to help teachers gain the skills needed to successfully implement the Healthier Kids Programme in public primary schools. The programme covers 20 schools across Abeokuta North, Obafemi-Owode, Sagamu, and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Governments.
He added that promoting good health among children is important for their development and for national growth, making the programme a valuable investment in their future.
Ifede also listed several projects Nestlé has carried out in schools as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. These include building VIP toilets and boreholes in 10 schools, providing handwashing facilities, and renovating or constructing classrooms with furniture in schools such as NUD Primary School, Owode; St. Paul’s Primary School, Orile Imo; and Salvation Army School I & II, Agbara. The company also set up a crèche at Salvation Army Primary School in Agbara.
SUBEB Secretary, Mr. Olubori Akinleye, thanked Nestlé for its strong support for basic education in the State and called on other organisations to partner with the government to improve the learning environment.
Nestlé’s Corporate Affairs Specialist, Miss Louis Nweke, restated the company’s commitment to supporting schools and promoting healthy living among pupils. She noted that Ogun State has the highest number of schools—20—benefiting from the Nestlé Healthier Kids Programme in Nigeria. She also said the company rewards outstanding teachers and thanked SUBEB for its cooperation.
The event ended with the presentation of awards to outstanding teachers in the State.
