Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka, convener of the United Premier Movement, has called on Egba leaders and stakeholders in Ogun Central Senatorial District to unite behind a credible and competent candidate for the governorship seat.
In a statement titled “2027: A Clarion Call to Our Leaders and People in Egbaland,” Shoyinka cautioned against backing aspirants based solely on ethnic sentiments or slogans such as “Awa Lokan.” He noted that since the return to democracy in 1999, no governor in Ogun State has emerged through sectional campaigns, but rather through broad-based support and viable political platforms.
Shoyinka stressed the importance of supporting a candidate with a proven track record of development and leadership integrity. Although he did not mention names, he hinted at a federal appointee from Egbaland who, according to him, represents a new generation of purposeful leadership.
He, however, acknowledged the strong chances of other leading contenders from different zones, including Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu of the PDP from Ogun East, and Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) of the APC from Ogun West, both of whom are likely to clinch their party tickets.
Warning against disunity or supporting unviable candidates, Shoyinka advised Egba leaders to either rally around a strong, structured contender from the zone or strategically align with frontrunners who have shown genuine interest in the development of Egbaland.
He concluded by urging stakeholders to prioritize strategy over sentiment, emphasizing that “no single section can win an election alone in Ogun politics.” He reiterated the need to support a candidate with the capacity to gain widespread trust and deliver inclusive governance across the three senatorial districts.
