Tragedy struck in the boxing world last night as former Nigerian and West African light-heavyweight champion, Olanrewaju ‘Success’ Segun, collapsed and died during a scheduled fight against a Ghanaian boxer.
The incident occurred at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana, during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League.
The former national and west African Light-heavyweight champion, Olanrewaju ‘Success’Segun ,was participating in an 8-round light-heavyweight bout when he suddenly lost consciousness in the third round.
Despite efforts to revive him, the Nigerian boxer tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The fight was immediately stopped, and Segun was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Ghanaian boxer, Jon Mbanugu, was Segun’s opponent in the ill-fated fight. Mbanugu was reportedly shaken by the incident and was seen trying to revive Segun before medical personnel arrived.
The boxing community in Ghana and Nigeria has been left in shock by the sudden and tragic death of the former champion.
Segun’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes and condolences from the boxing world.
