President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday night, citing the escalating political crisis and security concerns in the state.
In a nationwide broadcast, Tinubu expressed his deep concern over the situation, accusing Governor Siminilayi Fubara of demolishing the State House of Assembly building.
The president’s decision was made after a thorough evaluation of the situation, and he has suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas from Delta State has been appointed as the Administrator to oversee the affairs of the state.
The declaration comes hours after Tinubu met with his service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and top lawmakers, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
The meeting was aimed at addressing the political and security challenges in Rivers State.
The state of emergency declaration is seen as a significant step in restoring peace, order, and good governance in Rivers State, which has been plagued by a prolonged political crisis.
